SCA Origin

Ferenc started participating on September 9th A.S. LVI (56) or 2021 in the Common Era. Since adolescence, he had a long repressed interest in all things related to history and culture, the lore of the mundane world. Around late 2018, Ferenc stumbled across and saw a comment that mentioned "SCA" to a video or forum post about a medieval topic he was diving into. He did a quick search on the interwebs and eventually came across the (older version) of the kingdom website and developed a budding interest that, at the time, he deemed could not be pursued due to the mundane affairs of a reticent and broke university scholar. Then, such circumstances eventually changed that allowed Ferenc to attend his very first in person SCA gathering and went in with the intent to try a little bit of everything.

Persona

Tatár Ferenc is a 13th century Cuman-Kipchak Turkic nomad, wandering the eastern frontier as far north as the Rus principalities and as far south as the Egyptian sultanate.

Given his Asiatic appearance and the suspicions of Cuman-Kipchaks being Tatar (a misnomer the Hungarians and other Europeans had for Mongols) spies, the local Hungarians mockingly called him “Tatar”, thus he defiantly embraced the misnomer and combined that with a Hungarian name that sounded like his Rus nickname “Ferin”, rechristened as “Tatár Ferenc” henceforth.

His spirit lives on in different personas throughout other eras and cultures as well, reincarnating as a Zaporizhian Cossack, a Spanish Tercio, a beekeeper, and more.

Heraldry & Symbolism

Ferenc's device in a square shape for banners.

Blazon: Sable, a sun and an orle embattled on the inner edge Or.

The design overall is meant to be symmetrical so that the whole design could not be displayed incorrectly sideways, backwards, upside down, or any other orientation. Two tinctures keep the design simple.

Persona wise, the device represents the golden sun shining on the Black Sea, the region the persona hails from, with golden “walls” representing the conflicts along its coasts.

Mundanely, Sable (black) and Or (gold) are favorite colors and represent the balance of darkness and brightness, in several aspects. The sun is not only in reference to symbolism of mundane heritage but also to the sun representing the idea of energy, enlightenment, eternity, and that the sun will always rise again, out of the darkness. The orle embattled reminds him of a crenelated castle wall. He like castles.
