Award of Arms

Often the first award a player receives. An Award of Arms is given for contributing or active members of the Kingdom who look like they will continue with the SCA.  This award grants the recipient the right to use the title ‘Lord’ or ‘Lady’ and to display ‘arms’ (their own heraldic design) in the SCA. This title is recognized throughout the SCA.

Service Awards

Beacon of the Desert

The Beacon of the Desert recognizes volunteering within the Kingdom of Atenveldt. Service may take many forms including holding an officer position, field support, event stewarding, serving on a court, or any number of other tasks to make the game happen for everyone.  This award has the first level of precedence for Kingdom service awards, above an Award of Arms.

Light of Atenveldt

This award is given for outstanding service to the Kingdom. Outstanding service can be defined many ways and may include a body of work, extent of the service, and/or the amount of time spent giving service. This award has a higher level of precedence for service, above a Beacon of the Desert.

Commander of the Light of Atenveldt

The Commander of the Light is given to someone who continues give incredible service to the Kingdom and already has a Light of Atenveldt.  This is a very special award because only one may be given out per reign and the Crown puts a lot of thought into their choice.  The award includes a Grant of Arms and has a higher precedence than the Light of Atenveldt.

Star of the Desert

This award is given to recognize the large amount of volunteer time needed to run our annual Estrella War. The award can be given to anyone who has worked for the event, in Atenveldt or other kingdoms. This award has three levels for adults, and two for youth; it can be given to the same individual more than once, but only at a higher level than they currently hold.  The Star’s order of precedence is above an Award of Arms.

King's Sigil

This is a personal award from the King to thank people for their service to him during his reign.  The King gives out a token that he designs for his version of this award.  Some artisan Kings also make their own tokens.  This award ranks after an Award of Arms in order of precedence and people can receive multiple awards.

Queen's Cypher

The award thanks people for their personal service to the Queen/Consort.  The Queen gives out a token bearing her initials that she designs personally. This award ranks after an Award of Arms in order of precedence and people can receive multiple awards

Arts & Sciences Awards

Flower of the Desert

The Flower of the Desert recognizes people who show practical skill in the Arts and Sciences of the Middle Ages.  We learn and practice all the crafts, skills, and technologies used in the time period and cultures covered by the SCA. You see the results in use at our events; such as the costumes (garb) we wear, the armor used in combat, the illuminated scrolls presented in Court, and the recipes used for a feast.  This award has the first level of precedence for Kingdom arts awards, above an Award of Arms.

Fleur du Soleil

This award is given for excellence in the teaching and practice of the Arts and Sciences of the Middle Ages.  This award has a higher level of precedence in the arts, above a Flower of the Desert.

Commander of the Fleur du Soleil

The Commander of the Fleur is given to someone who continues to show an outstanding level of teaching and practice of their arts, and already has a Fleur du Soleil.  This is a very special award because only one may be given out per reign and the Crown puts a lot of thought into their choice.  The award includes a Grant of Arms and has a higher precedence than the Fleur du Soleil.

Order of the Golden Sun

Given to individuals after they have served the Kingdom as Kingdom of Atenveldt Arts and Sciences Champion. The Kingdom Arts and Sciences Champion is a court position held for one year and chosen through an annual competition of arts, skills and research from the time period and cultures covered by the SCA. This award ranks after an Award of Arms in the order of precedence

Order of the White Oak

Given to individuals after they have served the Kingdom as Bard of the Sun.  The Bard of the Sun is a court position held for one year and chosen through an annual competition of performing arts.  This award ranks after an Award of Arms in the order of precedence.

Armored Combat Awards

Blood of Fenris

This award recognizes people for their skill and enthusiasm in the armored fighting arts. At many events you will see armored fighters facing off with shields and rattan weapons in one-on-one tournaments, melees, and an army at Estrella War

The Blood of Fenris has the first level of precedence for Kingdom armored combat awards, above an Award of Arms.

Hawk's Lure

This award is given for excellence both in teaching and the use of traditional SCA style weaponry.  This award has a higher level of precedence in armored combat, above a Blood of Fenris.

Commander of the Hawk's Lure

The Commander of the Hawk’s Lure is given to someone who has a Hawk’s Lure and continues to show outstanding prowess in the fighting arts, both in teaching and in the use of traditional SCA style weaponry. This is a very special award as only one may be given out per reign and the Crown puts a lot of thought into their choice.  The award includes a Grant of Arms and has a higher precedence than the Hawk’s Lure or Guardian

Guardians of Atenveldt

This award is given to armored combat and rapier fighters who show talent in melee battles and military tactics for SCA-style warfare.  Fighters must also teach these skills to others. The Guardian of Atenveldt is given at three levels - Legionnaire, Officer, Commander; the level is shown by the color of the ribbon with the award medallion. The three levels are:

• Legionnaire – 1^st level, blue ribbon
• Officer – 2^nd level, white ribbon
• Commander – 3^rd level, gold ribbon (highest level)

This award may be presented to the same individual more than once, but only in a higher degree than is currently held by the recipient.  It has a higher level of precedence in armored combat, above a Blood of Fenris.

Defense with Rapier Awards

Golden Blade

This award recognizes people for their skill and enthusiasm in the art of defense with the rapier.  You will see rapier fighters fencing with real (but blunted) steel blades in one-on-one tournaments, melees, and an army at Estrella War. The Golden Blade has the first level of precedence for Kingdom rapier awards, above an Award of Arms.

Order of the Lynx

The Lynx of Atenveldt is given to those who have excelled in teaching and in their exceptional artistry in the art of defense with the rapier.  Recipients have demonstrated good judgment, shown boldness, swiftness, and courage both on and off the field.  In addition they exhibit the virtues of Prudence, Audacity, Celerity, and Fortitude. This award has a higher level of precedence in rapier defense awards, above a Golden Blade.

Commander of the Lynx

The Commander of the Lynx is given to those who already have a Lynx and continue to be outstanding in the virtues of the arte of defense — Prudence, Audacity, Celerity, and Fortitude; using steel weapons in both Rapier and Cut & Thrust styles. These individuals continue to show good judgment, boldness, swiftness and courage, both on and off the field.  They continue to excel in teaching and their exceptional artistry of these weapons forms. This is a very special award because only one may be given out per reign and the Crown puts a lot of thought into their choice.  The award includes a Grant of Arms and has a higher precedence than the Lynx, Luxbruder or Guardian.

Archery Awards

Black Pheon

The Black Pheon recognizes people for their skill and enthusiasm in the use of the bow and arrow.  Throughout the SCA timeline, archery was used for hunting and war, so our competitions are often designed to mimic situations faced by medieval archers.  Archers use recurve bows, crossbows and longbows and there is a focus on natural materials such as wood and feathers in our bows and arrows. The Black Pheon has the first level of precedence for Kingdom archery awards, above an Award of Arms.

Azure Archers of Atenveldt

This award is given for excellence in teaching archery and skill with bow and arrow, or crossbow.  This award has a higher level of precedence in our archery awards, above a Black Pheon.

Commander of the Azure Archers

The Commander is given to someone who has an Azure Archer and continues to show outstanding mastery in teaching archery plus skill with bow and arrow. This is a very special award as only one may be given out per reign and the Crown puts a lot of thought into their choice.  The award includes a Grant of Arms and has a higher precedence than the Azure Archer.

Courtesy Awards

Queen's Grace

The Queen’s Grace is given to people whose conduct the Queen feels best exemplify the ideals of courtliness and gentility in the current Middle Ages.  This award is given by the Queen exclusively; some consider this award to be a very personal choice and do not desire recommendations, while other Queens welcome and encourage name recommendations for this award. This award has the same level of precedence as the Light of Atenveldt, Fleur du Soleil, Hawks Lure.

Commander of the Queen's Grace

The Commander is given to those who already have a Queen’s Grace and whose conduct The Queen feels continues to be the best example of the ideals of courtliness and gentility in the Current Middle Ages. This is a very special award as only one may be given out per reign, so The Queen puts a lot of thought into her choice.  The award includes a Grant of Arms and has a higher precedence than the Queen’s Grace.

Historical Accuracy Awards

Pilgrim of the Desert

The Pilgrim of the Desert is given to people who promote historical authenticity in the recreation of the Current Middle Ages.  Since the SCA is an immersive history group where we research and re-create pre-17th century activities, it is fitting that we recognize those who endeavor to create a high standard of authenticity in their dress, behavior, persona, and goods, in the feast hall, in their encampments, and on the field.

Commander of the Pilgrim of the Desert

The Commander of the Pilgrim is given to someone who has a Pilgrim of the Desert and who continues in their outstanding promotion of historical authenticity. This is a very special award because only one may be given out per reign and the Crown puts a lot of thought into their choice.  The award includes a Grant of Arms and has a higher precedence than the Pilgrim of the Desert.

"Arts as Service" Awards

Golden Needle

This award is given to those that enhance the medieval atmosphere of the society by devoting their artistic skills to other people in order to serve the Kingdom.  The Golden Needle rewards those who have bridged the gap between creating and embellishing clothing for the love of creativity, and using this skill to serve the Kingdom and its people. This award includes a grant of Arms and is ranked with the Commander awards.

Golden Quill

This award is given to individuals that enhance the medieval atmosphere of the society by devoting their artistic skills to other people in order to serve the Kingdom.  The Golden Quill recognizes those that have bridged the gap between creating calligraphy and illumination on scrolls for the love of creativity, and using this skill to serve the Kingdom and its populace. This award includes a grant of Arms and is ranked with the Commander awards.

Golden Trumpet

This award is given to individuals that enhance the medieval atmosphere of the society by devoting their artistic skills to other people in order to serve the Kingdom. The Golden Trumpet recognizes those that have bridged the gap between creating/preforming Bardic or Heraldic Art for the love of creativity, and using this skill to serve the Kingdom and its populace. This award includes a grant of Arms and is ranked with the Commander awards.

Youth Awards

Lion's Pride

The Lion’s Pride is given to youth under 13 years of age who show knowledge of life in the Current Middle Ages. Recipients know and use the appropriate courtesies consistently; and demonstrate, to the best of their abilities and knowledge; a willingness to serve, abilities in the arts and sciences, and an interest in the arts of war.

Hope of the Sun

The Hope of the Sun is given to youth between 13 and 17 who show an understanding of life in the Current Middle Ages. Recipients know and use the appropriate courtesies consistently; show they are willing to serve (to the best of their abilities and understanding); show interest and ability in the arts and sciences, and/or an interest in the arts of war. This award is given in multiple disciplines, shown by the color of the ribbon with the award medallion and may be received by a youth once in each area:

• Yellow (Service)
• Green (Arts & Sciences)
• Red (Arts of War)

Lions of Atenveldt

The King gives the Lion of Atenveldt to the person whose behavior, he feels, shows the highest ideals and values of the Current Middle Ages.  Another expression is the person who “embodies the SCA” in the mind of the King.  The award is given once per reign and is a very personal choice for the King.  The Lion is a long-standing tradition in Atenveldt and is highly cherished award.  It carries a Grant of Arms, ranking after Thegns and Banthegns and above all the Commander awards in precedence.
