Heraldry:Registration of Names and Armory

One of the roles of the heralds of the Kingdom of Atenveldt is the consultation and submission registration of unique and historically plausible names and armory (devices and badges) for registration with the SCA College of Arms (sometimes referred to as Laurel).  There is a broad range of cultures and time periods in which we can register names and armory, but we generally will not register names that fall outside the structure and content of names attested in period sources.  Neither can we register modern items or designs in armory.

The first step in the registration process is research, design (armory), and documentation of the name and armory being submitted.  This step occurs at the beginning of the process. Submitters are strongly encouraged to use the resources available in the Society and consult with your local herald rather than work on your own.  If you need assistance or have questions, email Parhelium Herald.

Once the submission is designed and documented, the rest of the registration process typically involves two phases.  Both involve submission, review, commentary, and decision on the submitted item(s), but with different purposes.  The Kingdom phase takes 1-2 months, and it is intended to catch style, conflict, and issues quickly , with the intent to address them before they go up to Laurel.  In almost all cases, the Atenveldt CoA will accept and forward submissions to Laurel, where a longer process lasting about 5 months, is more rigorous than at Kingdom, and the outcome is a decision on the registerability of items, and the registration of those that can be.
